Social Media Marketing: Pros and Cons

Are you like me – or most business owners and entrepreneurs for that matter? Do you have a love-hate relationship with social media? I know I do.

I understand its importance – especially for my business. And I love connecting and interacting with people on social media. I love leaving congratulatory messages on new ventures and seeing what colleagues are currently sharing.

But the constant changes and the need to create content can be draining. After all, I didn’t start my business to spend all of my time pushing out content.

I’ve found that I definitely need to focus on particular platforms, repurpose content that I have, and be strategic in what I’m sharing. It’s what keeps me from falling into the social media abyss.

The Momentum CEO Network recently met to discuss the pros and cons of social media marketing. I love hearing what this group shares! With such a diverse group, you always receive different opinions and learn different ways of tackling things. This meeting was no different.

Here’s a few comments from that meeting:

“You don’t want to be seen as not being present [on social media.] You have to be there, even if you don’t make as much noise as everyone else.” – Peter Cotton

“It is still critical to collect email addresses. If a social media platform wants to take down your business for no reason, they can.” – Heather Cantor

“Social media is necessary, but is exhausting. I’m a writer, so I just put myself in this hamster wheel of creating content. It gives me a lot of visibility, but it hasn’t necessarily converted into business. Business comes from networking. Social media presence is necessary so you can tell people what you’re doing, what you’re up to.” – Carolyn Mozell

“I found that I got away from “is it generating business” to using [social media] as a brand builder.” – Pete Alexander

Do any of these thoughts resonate with you? Do you have a love-hate relationship with social media? What have you found to be effective when it comes to social media for your business? Where are you focusing your efforts?
