Not Meeting Your Targets? See How a Strategic Goal Review Can Turn Things Around
Hey you, yes… YOU. I’ve got a fun challenge for you.
I’m betting that right now, as you’re reading this, you’re way ahead on your goals than you give yourself credit for. And I’m not just throwing words around – I’m ready to put money on it!
Why am I so confident? Well, after nearly two decades (hey, our 20th anniversary is coming up in February 2024!) of guiding folks to their personal and business milestones, one thing’s crystal clear: we’re all champs at underestimating our achievements.
Just the other day, I had this eye-opening chat with Andrea Mastrobattista, a member of our Momentum Accountability Program. We’ve been brainstorming on her 2024 strategy, and, as you know, you can’t really march forward without a glance back.
Boy, were we in for a surprise! As Andrea and I ticked off her seven big goals for the year, our jaws nearly hit the floor. Turns out, Andrea had been knocking her 2023 targets out of the park without even realizing it! Imagine her astonishment – and mine, at discovering she hadn’t just met her goals; she’d smashed them. The look on her face was priceless!
But, you should know something. Andrea and I didn’t just stumble on this discovery. We were only able to extract this much information because we applied the guide 3-step guide below, and you can do it too. It’s simple.
3-step guide to conducting a productive goal review
-
- Reconnect with Your Vision: Dig up your goal list and rekindle that initial spark.
-
- Check the Status: Label each goal – To Do, In Progress, Done, or This Goal Has Changed. Yep, it’s totally fine to tweak your goals if they’re not fitting anymore.
-
- Track Your Journey: How did you do it? — Reflect on the processes or steps it took you to arrive at where you currently are. That’s to say, how did you adapt along the way? What steps did you take? Were they effective.
Why is a goal review important?
Understanding the journey behind your goal provides invaluable insights into your unique strategies and methods. It helps identify what worked, what didn’t, and shapes more effective approaches for future success.
By implementing this 3-step guide, you’re not just reviewing goals; you’re engaging in a comprehensive self-analysis that can illuminate both your achievements and areas for improvement. It’s a straightforward yet powerful approach to self-development and strategic planning.
What we realized after reviewing Andrea’s goals
-
- She nailed 4 out of her 7 goals for 2023 (that’s a whopping 57% success rate!)
-
- She tweaked 2 goals to better suit her path and is on her way to achieving them.
-
- 1 goal is still in the works.
-
- And get this: one goal she thought was a miss? She exceeded it by over 6 times!
During our session, we even spotted four new goals for next year, inspired by her 2023 triumphs. Oh, and did I mention she did all this while battling health issues and expanding her business with a new product line? Talk about overachieving!
What does Andrea’s Story mean to you?
Andrea’s story is a powerful illustration of a common challenge many high-achievers and visionaries face: self-criticism and underestimation of their own progress. This tendency to be overly harsh on oneself often masks the true extent of their achievements. Seeing her face light up with realization that she was doing okay, and not underperforming like she initially thought, was a reminder of the impact we’re making at the Sappari Group. It’s moments like these that make it all worthwhile.
So, here’s my invitation to you: As 2023 is wrapping up, take a moment to review your own goals with the steps I’ve shared. Then, shoot me a message with your discoveries. You’d be surprised at your findings! Next week, I’ll be back with more insights to help you craft a killer 2024 Strategic Plan.
Until then, remain positive.
Your partner in success,
Nettie Owens ♥
