Check Out Grocery IQ

A friend put me on to a really helpful new way to keep my grocery list. It’s an application called Grocery IQ that is available online and also as an app for smartphones. I have been using it all week and I love it! You can add items by typing them into the list, or by scanning a barcode with your phone’s camera! You can break down the list by store, and it also will automatically separate your items by

What’s Stopping You?

Question: If there was one thing that you could do to change your life for the better, what would it be? You may be one of those people that has the world by the tail, has it all together, and wouldn’t change a thing, but for most of us, there is something that we are striving for that we want to be able to say that we have achieved. Think about it for awhile. Give yourself some time to really

Italian Egg Soup

It may seem like there are fewer options in the winter for vibrant, fresh food. It is the land of potatoes, squashes and other veggies that keep well in a root cellar. But, this Italian Egg Soup recipe that is found on Eating Well’s website is a cheerful, light soup that really brightens my day. I thrive on local food but I also try to eat in season. In the winter citrus fruits and avocados are in season, they may

Snow Solutions

It’s truly the season of winter! The cold has settled in and the snow, ice and wind have become a part of life for a couple of months. It is a season of fun for the kids. Snow days spent outside sledding and building snowmen and forts, add a change of tempo to the usual routine. With the cold and snow, however, come some specific organizational challenges, as boots, coats, snow pants, hats, gloves and scarves seem to adorn every

The Cobbler’s Children

There is an old adage that says, ‘The Cobbler’s children have no shoes.” I often get asked a question along those lines that goes something like this, ‘So is YOUR home a sanctuary of order or is it like the cobbler’s children?’ Here is my response. It is not like the cobbler’s children nor is it a sanctuary of order. I practice what I teach my client’s first at home. I will often try out new systems for organizing here

The Thanksgiving Aftermath

I suppose a post about Thanksgiving and the season’s abundance would have been appropriate but unfortunately, it didn’t happen. We were blessed though and bought two turkeys from two different local farms: a heritage bird from Rumbleway and a traditional white from Sunny Hill. We enjoyed a feast at my parents’ house surrounded by family and children. There was stuffing, squash, potatoes, brussels sprouts, bread and cranberry sauce. You can really hit a home run on Thanksgiving and do it

Eggs, Turkeys and More Oh My!

There is a farm at the intersection of Thomas Run Road and Pennington. From Havre de Grace, take Rt 22 like you are heading to Harford Community College (or the Bel Air area) and take a right on Thomas Run Road. Take a left on Pennington and then a left on Thomas Run Road. You will see a large farm on the left and

Cabbage Recipes

Cabbage is abundant now and for certain recipes freezing it will give you options all winter long. Check out this website of cabbage recipes for great cabbage soup ideas http://www.cheriestihler.com/recipes/soups.html. I usually chop the cabbage, then freeze in bags. You can grab out what you need in a pinch. Tonight we are having this Minute Minestrone recipe from the website above. I make modifications to what veggies and beans I have on hand. REAL Food

This thought came to me last night while talking to my sister and my son’s Godfather. The topic was the freshly roasted pumpkin seeds that we were eating. Earlier in the day, the children, my husband and I had carved pumpkins and saved the seeds to roast and enjoy. My sister noted that she thought pumpkin seeds had iron in them. They do in fact have iron (12% of your daily recommended value if you eat a cup of them)
